In harmony with the mission statements of Lee University and its College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Mathematical Sciences strives to equip students for success in mathematics through its commitment to excellence in teaching, interdisciplinary studies, and innovative research. Majors are provided with a foundation in mathematics to enable them to think critically, communicate clearly, and perform successfully in their vocational calling. Through the integration of faith and its academic disciplines, the department promotes the highest standards of professional and ethical behavior. Students are challenged to discover and use their God-given gifts and talents to make a positive impact in their world.
ALEKS Math Placement, Prep, and Learning
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the ALEKS Math Placement, Preparation, and Learning Assessment to determine readiness for college mathematics courses. The ALEKS program includes an online placement assessment that takes approximately 90-120 minutes to complete. After the assessment is complete, ALEKS provides individualized Prep and Learning Modules designed to develop the student’s math skills and comprehension. After completing the Prep and Learning Modules, students may retake the assessment for a possibly higher placement. Students wishing to enroll in a more advanced mathematics course than they are currently eligible to take may use the ALEKS resource to demonstrate readiness for the desired course. Students maintain free access to the ALEKS for up to one year and may continue to use the Prep and Learning Modules for additional math practice during that time. Students interested in utilizing the ALEKS assessment should contact the Department of Mathematical Sciences: Blayne Carroll in SMC 350 A.
Mathematics
The mathematics programs (Mathematics (MATHS.BS), Mathematics, Actuarial Science Emphasis (MATAS.BS), MATPE.BS) prepare students for graduate study in mathematics and careers in research, statistics, and actuarial science, as well as for further study in engineering.
Mathematics Education
The mathematics education program (MATHS.BST) prepares graduates for initial employment as mathematics teachers in middle and secondary schools and entrance to graduate schools. The program emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving, and development of curriculum and pedagogical skills.
Engineering
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (ENGNR.BS) is designed to prepare students for careers in the broad field of engineering through exposure to multiple engineering disciplines. This interdisciplinary foundation equips graduates with the knowledge and flexibility to pursue a wide range of engineering pathways, including advanced study in a specific discipline.
Computer Science
The Computer Science program (Computer Science (CMPSC.BS) ) prepares students for careers in computing as well as for graduate study in computer science. The program focuses on providing programming experience, theoretical analysis, and mathematical rigor.
