In order to be eligible to sit for National Accreditation boards in Athletic Training all candidates are required to meet the follow prerequisites and maintain appropriate credentials:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA close to 3.0.
- Report scores for GRE (suggested 300 for verbal and quantitative).
- Hold a certification in CPR/AED for the Healthcare Professional (e.g. American Red Cross, American Heart Association, etc.) with First Aid certification or equivalent.
- Accumulate approximately 50 hours with 1 or more Athletic Trainers with appropriate state and national licensures.
- Complete coursework in the following content areas:
- Chemistry (minimum one semester)
- Biology (minimum one semester)
- Anatomy and Physiology (minimum two semesters)
- Exercise Physiology (minimum one semesters)
- General Psychology
- Advanced upper level Psychology (e.g. Lifespan development, etc.)
- Statistics (preferred in psychology department)
- Kinesiology or Biomechanics
6. Coursework in the following content areas, suggested but not required:
- Research Methods
- Personal Health, Public Health, etc.
- Medical Terminology
- Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries or Intro to Athletic Training Course
The Graduate Athletic Training Committee will review the following items when determining acceptance:
- Basic application, official transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation, graduate essay
- Background check, interview (for selectred applicants)
Once a student has completed the entire application process then those students will be invited for an interview on campus. Campus visits are highly encouraged prior to completion of the application process.
Program Policies, Outcomes, and Fees
Once the students are accepted into the program they are expected to be knowledgeable about various policies, such as standard of dress, social media, student health, retention, disciplinary, grievance, and BOC endorsement. In addition, students are responsible for Athletic Training Assessment Fees (ATEP 500, ATEP 501, ATEP 502, ATEP 503, ATEP 504) of $75. NOTE: Other course fees may apply depending on course requirements. The student is responsible for travel (no more than 45 miles) to reach their assigned site. Each student will be financially responsible for all clinical attire.
As a student in training for a health profession, all students will be trained in OSHA, HIPAA, BBP, and IPE. A strong emphasis is placed on medical ethics, confidentiality, and positive professional disposition.
Student learning outcomes from the comprehensive assessment plan will be systematically reviewed in order to evaluate all aspects of the graduate educational program. Current outcome data is available on the LU Athletic Training Website. After the first cohort of graduate students have graduated and attempted the BOC, the new outcome data will be available at that time.
