BIOS 371 - Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) This course introduces the concepts and components of mapping, analyzing and displaying geospatial data through a geographic information system (GIS). It teaches the essential skills of GIS through ArcGIS software and global positioning system (GPS) technology. GIS technology has broad applications in natural and social sciences, humanities, environmental studies, engineering, and business. Examples include wildlife habitat study, urban and regional planning, contagious disease monitoring, agriculture and forestry management, crime hotspot analysis, environmental quality assessment, emergency management, transportation planning, consumer and competitor analysis. This course will provide practical experience in using GIS in various disciplines.
