Global Perspectives

The Global Perspectives Program is one of the most unique and exciting opportunities that Lee University offers because it requires students to travel and to study a culture different from their own. Through the Global Perspectives Program, students will fulfill at least two credit hours: GNST 200: Global Perspectives Seminar (1) and GNST 250-3: Cross-Cultural Experience (1-3 credit hours). GNST 200 is the prerequisite course that prepares students for the intentional study of a culture different than their own. This course should generally be taken during the sophomore year. After consultation with their academic advisor as to the appropriate sophomore semester the student registers themselves for this course along with their other courses. GNST 250-3 is the actual experience component where students engage and immerse themselves within an intended target culture. It is recommended that the GNST 250-3 Global Experience course is taken between the end of the sophomore year and the end of the junior year.  These courses and experience cannot be taken out of sequence and students should be aware that these courses are a graduation requirement.

Three options are offered for fulfilling the experience component of the requirement:

1. Participate in one of Lee’s many school-sponsored Global Perspectives trips. Every year, Lee offers between 20 - 25 Global Perspectives trips, led by our very own credentialed faculty, as an economical and rewarding cross-cultural experience. While the majority of trips occur during the summer, several are offered during Christmas and Spring breaks. Not only can students fulfill their cross-cultural requirements by participating in a Lee-sponsored trip, they can find a trip that offers course credit in most major fields of study. By traveling and earning credit at the same time, 65% of the tuition dollars paid are used to cover trip expenses. Very few universities if any have made a financial commitment of this magnitude to assist students in studying abroad. In addtion to traveling overseas there are a few domestic opportunities that offer engagement with other cultures such as American Indians and other distinct and culturally different groups.

Global Perspectives trips must be paid in full prior to departure and all require a minimum $1000 deposit to reserve a place on the trip.

There are separate late fees listed below for students who are not cleared for travel by posted deadlines for health clearance, travel paperwork, payment in full and enrollment confirmation:

2024-2025

* Students not cleared by the posted deadlines - $50
* Students not cleared by the week before departure - $75
* Students not cleared by the day before departure - $100

These fees must be paid to the Global Perspectives Office before the student will be allowed to travel.

2. Apply to conduct an Individually Arranged Cross-Cultural Study. Some students choose to conduct their own cross-cultural experience by researching and designing an independent study unique to their preferences and personality. A student can fulfill this requirement if the experience is designed to be an in-depth academic analysis of a particular culture; it has to be prepared for and intentionally undertaken with an academic goal in mind. Some students opt to become active participants in a domestic church or community where the culture differs significantly from their own.  Students who choose to meet the cross-cultural study requirements by arranging any type of individual study will be required to complete a minimum of 45 hours over a period of no less than 7 days. This period of time does not not include travel time and should take place during those times when classes are not being held e.g. any breaks that are more than 7 days in length. They should interact with members of a targeted culture significantly different from their own. This model is based upon a typical one credit- hour internship experience requirement. All applications for an individual study are rigorously reviewed by the Global Perspectives Committee to ensure that the requirements of the course are met. Individually arranged cross-cultural study experiences that cause students to miss regular semester classes will not be approved.

There are separate fees involved for the individually arranged study as listed below:

2024-2025

* Standard fee for GNST 250 Individually Arranged Cross-Cultural Experience - $915 per credit hour
* Late fee charged to students who apply after the posted deadlines for a particular term - $30

3. Qualify for exemption from the Cross-Cultural experience requirement. Some students who have had significant cross-cultural life experiences prior to coming to Lee may qualify for exemption from the GNST 250-3 requirement. These students still take the GNST 200: Global Perspectives Seminar course and this may be taken at any time after they have submitted the Petition for Exception to the Global Perspectives Office and it has been approved by the Global Perspectives Committee. The school has set clear guidelines for students who may be exempt:

  • Extensive missions work in one particular culture, at least 6 months in duration; short-term mission trips do not qualify
  • Being raised or having lived in a foreign country as a young adult for at least 24 months
  • Significant academic study in a foreign college/university
  • Having spent a minimum of one year as a foreign exchange student during high school

Lists of current trips as well as information about individually arranged study applications and exemptions can be found on the Global Perspectives website: www.globalperspectives.leeuniversity.edu.
