Public Administration
The History, Political Science and Humanities Department has as its mission preparing students for occupations such as law, teaching and international work, as well as entrance into graduate and professional schools. We believe our students should be taught from a Christian perspective and should plan to be involved in vocations that fulfill the great commission of Jesus. A broad liberal arts undergraduate education should expand the students’ understanding of their own historical context, increase their knowledge of political issues and facilitate their adjustment to a rapidly changing social world by preparing them to recognize and appreciate cultural diversity all from within a Biblical worldview. We offer majors in History, Humanities, Political Science, Classics, International Relations, and Public Administration. Teacher licensure can be obtained in history with an emphasis in political science or economics for 6th through 12th grade. Minors include history, humanities, and political science.
History
Students electing to major in history have the opportunity to select from a varied field of study designed to provide instruction and direction that will enable graduates to succeed in future endeavors such as graduate programs and professional careers. The program also offers students the opportunity to gain teacher licensure. Students are taught to think critically, to communicate (in both written and verbal form) in an articulate manner, and to respect opinions and ideas unlike their own. Finally, the program seeks to instill in students an appreciation of their own history as well as the histories of others.
Humanities
The Humanities major offers a multi-disciplinary foundation for understanding and appreciating the western cultural tradition. All humanities students explore various expressions of western literature, philosophy, music and the fine arts within their original historical contexts, in relation to one another, and in relation to modern institutions and cultures. The major offers its students the opportunity to specialize in one of three concentrations: Classical Studies, Modern and Contemporary Studies, and Philosophy.
Classics
The program in Classics fosters study of the classical (Greek and Roman) and post-classical (medieval) worlds with a solid emphasis in Greek and Latin. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics prepares students for further study at graduate level and for future careers in teaching, law, theology, journalism and writing, among other professional fields. Classics majors excel in thinking critically and contextually, communicating precisely and clearly, and appreciating the cultural, ethical, and historical implications of words and ideas.
Political Science
Lee’s Political Science curriculum offers students a broad range of coursework in the discipline, with opportunities to specialize in American Politics, Political Theory, or International Relations and Comparative Government. While the major is designed to prepare students for numerous post-graduate experiences, its primary goal is to prepare students for thoughtful civic engagement as responsible Christian citizens. Our program is unique in that it models the virtues it wishes to inculcate through strong faculty mentoring and robust sense of community outside of the classroom. Coursework emphasizes critical analysis of political theory and practice, as well as an understanding of political institutions and actors. Upon graduation, students frequently pursue graduate studies in political science, law school, and careers in government service or the private sector. This degree also provides students with the skills necessary to compete in such widely diverse fields as public and international affairs, campaign management, lobbying and issue advocacy, and many others.
International Studies
The Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies provides a multidisciplinary approach to the study of international affairs, drawing from subjects such as politics, religion, history, anthropology, and foreign languages, with the goal to prepare the students for numerous post-graduation experiences. Students specialize in an policy issue and choose a regional concentration, and learn how to design policies and strategies to manage international challenges. This degree equips students with the skills necessary for roles in government and foreign services, business, defense, international development, non-governmental and nonprofit organizations, and consulting firms, among others.
Public Administration
The Public Administration program at Lee University provides students an opportunity to blend the theory and practice of the American governmental system. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, students delve deeply into the institutional theory and history of American government while also honing the skills of practical application. Students in this program will develop analytic skills in methodological research, accounting and budgeting, communication strategies, and managerial theories and practices. Student’s training in American political institutions and processes provide a rich context for public service by developing a sense of ethical citizenship as well as the values of American political culture. This major is perfect for students interested in principles of American governance, and who also look forward to applying that knowledge with a career in governmental administration or non-governmental management.
Minor
The Department of History, Political Science, and Humanities offers minors in History, Political Science, Humanities, and Pre Law. A minimum of 18 hours is required for all minors.
